Why Page Builder Sites Slow Down Los Angeles Businesses

Page builders are not a scam and they are not useless. They are a tradeoff, and most small businesses accept the tradeoff without ever being told what it was. Here is the honest version.

What a page builder actually sends to a phone

Load a typical WordPress site with a commercial theme and a page builder plugin and your phone downloads somewhere between two and four megabytes before it shows anything useful. That includes a framework, a slider library, an icon set with two thousand icons you will never use, three stylesheets that override each other, and analytics from four vendors.

A hand coded version of the same page is usually under five hundred kilobytes. The difference is not craftsmanship for its own sake. It is roughly four seconds on a mediocre connection, and four seconds is longer than most people will wait.

Why seconds matter more in Los Angeles

Your customers are rarely at a desk. They are in a parked car between appointments, standing on a job site, sitting in a parking structure with one bar, or scrolling at a long red light on Sepulveda. These are the worst conditions a website faces and they are the normal conditions for this city.

Every study on this says roughly the same thing and matches what we see in analytics: bounce rate climbs steeply after about three seconds. On a slow site the people you lose are disproportionately the ones on bad connections, which in Los Angeles means the ones out in the world about to spend money.

The security side nobody mentions at signup

A WordPress install with a dozen plugins is a dozen pieces of software that need patching, written by a dozen parties with different standards. Most sites that get defaced or start redirecting to a pharmacy page were not targeted. They were running an outdated plugin that a bot found automatically.

A static hand coded site has almost nothing to attack. There is no database, no admin login, no plugin layer. That is not marketing, it is just what is left when you take those pieces out.

The costs that show up in year two

The build price is rarely the real price. Theme license renewal, the booking plugin, the forms plugin, the SEO plugin's premium tier, hosting that jumps when the introductory rate ends, and a developer who charges by the hour for text edits. It adds up quietly to more than the original quote.

We priced against exactly that, which is why our plans fold hosting, maintenance, security updates, and changes into one monthly number with no build fee at the front.

What you give up by going custom

You give up editing pages yourself. That is a real cost and we would rather say it now than have you discover it in month two. If you publish three times a week, run constant promotions, or want to rearrange your homepage on a Sunday night, a builder genuinely fits you better and we will tell you so on the first email.

What you get instead is that changes are somebody else's job. You send an email, it goes up within a couple of business days, and nobody bills you for it. For most salons, trades, and practices that is the better trade, because they were never going to edit the site anyway.

How to check your own site in two minutes

Open PageSpeed Insights, put your homepage in, and read the mobile score rather than the desktop one. Desktop scores flatter everybody. If mobile comes back under 50, your visitors on cellular are having a worse time than you think.

Then do the honest test: open your site on your own phone, on cellular with wifi off, standing outside. That is the experience your customers actually get. If you want a second opinion, send us the address and we will tell you what we see either way.
